Sharing is caring!

Staying in is the new going out, we don’t even have a say in that any more, but even if you are missing your friends and loved ones, you can hold virtual parties thanks to technology such as Zoom and FaceTime. Whether you fancy an online escape room (I’ve done one and they are brilliant) or a virtual party, you really can connect and have fun.

Ascot is a great time to do this, whether or not you fancy a flutter. For the first time ever, it is taking place behind closed doors, and this year is from Tuesday 16th June to Saturday 20th June. One of the highlights of Ascot is usually Ladies Day, a day where celebrities mingle with Royalty, and everyone is there to show off their fashion styles. There is of course normally a very strict dress code too. Ladies Day is traditionally the day when the Gold Cup is run, and so we think that is a great day to hold a virtual Ascot party. All you need to do is make sure your friends and family are available, and get them on a video call.

Whether you go for Ladies Day, or opening day, you can do a sweepstake nearer the time when the horses running in a particular race are announced. If you are keen to win, check out Racing Tips Ascot Day 1 Tips. You can all put in a pound or two, or you can just do it for glory.

If you are doing it on Ladies Day, consider fashion prizes. Whether it’s best outfit, best hat or fascinator, best shoes or anything else. You could also involve the kids and make it fancy dress or best costume made from toilet paper (assuming you stockpiled at the start of lockdown). If you don’t want to dress up like “bins out dress up” another popular choice is best second hand outfit, so the only items allowed are items which are second hand, ideally from a charity or thrift store.

Another idea is to do a bake off style competition, just remember though that whatever you bake, your household will need to probably eat it themselves, so don’t make it too big. You can all make a horse racing themed cake or biscuit, and vote on each other’s things online.

If you are going to place a bet, just remember:

  • Only spend what you can afford and remember to never chase your losses
  • Set a budget for the day/festival and stick to it
  • If gambling or betting is something you struggle with, let your friends know. You can either not take part, or make it about the glory rather than any monetary prize. The ideas shared here can be used for any event, so you could just organise an event which doesn’t involve any betting or sweepstakes.
